1 Functions

The Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM reads a column of a newspaper to a person. It receives the image of a newspaper page and, when the person has pointed at the top of a column, the Point; it returns the text of that column as a Portable Avatar that reads it.

2 Reference Model

Figure 1 depicts the Reference Model of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM.

Figure 1 – Reference Model of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM

The operation of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM develops in the following way:

  1. A human provides:
    1. The image of a newspaper page.
    2. When the human points at the top of a column, the Point.
  2. The User Agent provides the Machine ID.
  3. The machine provides the Portable Avatar that reads the text of the column.

3 I/O Data

Table 1 specifies the Input and Output Data of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM.

Table 1 – I/O Data of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM

Input Description
Input Visual The image of the newspaper page.
Input Point The Point at the top of the column that the person has pointed at. Optional.
Machine ID Identifier of the machine.
Output Description
Portable Avatar The avatar that reads the text of the column.

4 SubAIMs

4.1 Reference Model

Figure 2 depicts the Reference Model of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) Composite AIM.

Figure 2 – Reference Model of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) Composite AIM

4.2 Operation

The Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM receives the image of the newspaper page and, if the person has pointed at the top of a column, the Point. Optical Character Recognition finds the lines of text of a band of the page about the Point. Column Text Selection takes the text of the column from those lines. Portable Avatar Multiplexing puts the text in the Portable Avatar, which reads it. Acquisition and delivery are the User Agent’s, not SubAIMs.

4.3 Functions of SubAIMs

Table 2 provides the functions of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) SubAIMs.

Table 2 – Functions of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) SubAIMs

SubAIM Function
Optical Character Recognition Finds the lines of text of a band of the page image about the Point.
Column Text Selection Takes the text of the column from the lines found, given the Point.
Portable Avatar Multiplexing Puts the text of the column and the Machine ID in the Portable Avatar.

4.4 I/O Data of SubAIMs

Table 3 gives the Input and Output Data of the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) SubAIMs.

8 Conformance Testing

Table 5 provides the Conformance Testing Method for the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM. Conformance Testing of the individual SubAIMs is given by the individual AIM specifications.
If a schema contains references to other schemas, conformance of data for the primary schema implies that any data referencing a secondary schema shall also validate against the relevant schema, if present, and conform with the Qualifier, if present.

Table 5 – Conformance Testing Method for the Newspaper Reader (MMC‑NPR) AIM

Receives Input Visual Shall validate against Basic Visual Object schema. Visual Data shall conform with Visual Qualifier.
Input Point Shall validate against Point schema.
Machine ID Shall be a string.
Produces Portable Avatar Shall validate against Portable Avatar schema.
